Fractional leadership

What does a fractional CMO cost?

The range, what drives it, and how to think about the tradeoff.

The short answer

Fractional CMO engagements typically run $5,000 to $15,000 per month, most commonly for 10-25 hours per week. This is a general market range from current market research, not a quote — actual cost depends on scope, seniority, and hours committed. For comparison, temporary full-time interim leadership typically runs higher, $15,000 to $30,000 per month — see interim vs. fractional for the fuller distinction.

What actually drives the price

Four things move the number most: hours committed per week, the seniority and track record of the person, whether the scope is strategy-only or strategy plus hands-on execution, and total engagement length. A strategy-only engagement at 10 hours a week sits at the lower end; strategy plus hands-on execution at 25 hours a week sits at the higher end.

How it compares to a full-time hire

A fractional CMO typically costs a fraction of a full-time VP or CMO's total compensation — salary, equity, benefits, and the risk of a bad full-time hire or eventual severance all factor in. The tradeoff is real: fewer hours per week in exchange for meaningfully lower cost and no long-term commitment. That tradeoff tends to make sense for a company with a genuine but part-time need — not yet ready to justify a full-time seat, but past the point of no senior marketing leadership at all.

How engagements typically start

Most fractional engagements begin with a focused initial term — often around three months, covering a diagnostic and initial strategy work — before settling into an ongoing, month-to-month cadence if it's working for both sides.
