Fractional leadership

Interim CMO vs. fractional CMO: which do you need?

They solve different problems. Here's how to tell which one fits.

The short answer

An interim CMO joins full-time, on a temporary basis — usually three to nine months — to bridge an active leadership gap, most often after a departure or during a search for a permanent hire. A fractional CMO works part-time on an ongoing basis, providing senior strategic marketing leadership without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire. The difference is really about the shape of the need: a gap to fill full-time and temporarily, versus an ongoing need that doesn't justify a full-time seat.

What each typically costs

Fractional engagements typically run $5,000 to $15,000 per month, most often for 10-25 hours a week. Interim engagements, being full-time, typically run higher — $15,000 to $30,000 per month. These are general market ranges from current market research, not a quote for any specific engagement; actual cost depends on scope, seniority, and hours.

When to choose interim

Choose interim when there's an active gap: the last marketing leader is gone, the team needs someone accountable for day-to-day execution and quarterly targets right now, and a permanent search is underway in parallel. Interim leadership focuses on stability and continuity first.

When to choose fractional

Choose fractional when the need is real but doesn't require — or doesn't yet justify — a full-time seat: a startup building its first real marketing function, or a growth-stage company whose GTM function needs a diagnostic and a push toward momentum without adding permanent headcount. Fractional leadership tends to focus more on strategy, systems, and team design, with hands-on execution layered in as needed.

They're not mutually exclusive

Some engagements start as one and become the other — a fractional relationship that expands into more hours as scope grows, or an interim placement that becomes an ongoing fractional one once the immediate gap is resolved. The label matters less than being honest about which problem is actually being solved.
